Legacy: What Are People and Company Audiences?

Last Updated: September 27, 2023

🔍 Please note: This article is for customers on Standard Bundle, Enrichment, or Clearbit Platform plans.

Clearbit allows you to create real-time notifications based on either a person or a company joining or leaving segments that you can define. For example, you can set up Clearbit to send a Slack notification whenever a company with an employee count between 10 and 100 visit your pricing page.

What Type of Data Can Clearbit Receive?

There are two types of data that Clearbit can receive that can trigger a notification: People or Companies. Each Person and Company is called a record. In Clearbit's interface, you can find the records under the corresponding section in the left-hand primary sidebar navigation.

How Are Records Created?

There are 4 ways that records are created in Clearbit:

Salesforce and HubSpot Sync (People and Companies)

When you sync with your Salesforce account, or with your HubSpot account, we'll automatically create Company records for all Accounts and People records for all Leads and Contacts. Note that all Salesforce or HubSpot records with the same domain or email address will be nested under the same Clearbit record.

Clearbit Reveal (Companies Only)

By adding the Clearbit tag to your site or creating a Clearbit Segment webhook, we'll automatically use Clearbit Reveal to identify the accounts behind anonymous traffic. If no Company record exists for that account, we'll create one. If a Company exists, we'll update it with the new data.

Identify Calls (People Only)

You can identify people with either the Clearbit tag or with the Clearbit Segment webhook whenever a user logs in or otherwise identifies themselves on your site. By default, we drop a cookie to track anonymous traffic, and by identifying the user we'll be able to associate an email address to the user's events (e.g. page views). If a record doesn't already exist for that email, we'll create one. If a record exists, we'll update it with the new data.

Are Records Unique in Clearbit?

As with other Clearbit records, Companies are deduped on domain and people are deduped on email. We also make sure to roll up domain alias' to their canonical domain (clearbit.co results are returned as clearbit.com, for instance). This is also how we merge records when receiving data from multiple sources.

How Do I See What Data You Have On a Record?

Once you click on a record, you can see all the attributes we have on a record in the Details tab. This is useful for quickly querying all your sources of customer data at once, or even confirming that a segment is working how you'd expect.
